In 1888 Henry Belk opened his first store in North Carolina. Initially the company was named New York Racket, and the name was changed to Belk Brothers when Henry’s brother John Belk joined as a partner. Belk was a pioneer in business practices like buying in volume to pass savings on and then selling at fixed prices.

The chain grew steadily and in 1909 built a huge flagship store in downtown Charlotte. This store would remain open until 1988, and later became the Bank of America Corporate Center.

Belk started expanding into the west in 1921 through many partnerships with local merchandisers. This allowed the chain to accelerate their growth but also diluted their brand identity.

By the 1990s there were over 350 different legal entities owning Belk stores, and in 1998 Belk, Inc. was formed to merge the 112 remaining Belk companies.

In 2010 the chain updated their logo for the first time since 1967, also changing their slogan to “Modern. Southern. Style.”

Belk had a total of 293 stores by 2014, with the biggest concentration being 65 locations in North Carolina.
