Boxing Day is celebrated every year on December 26, the day after Christmas. It is a holiday that has multiple origins (or at least it is not so clear) and was brought to the USA by the English.

It has no relation to sports and Boxing Day is a date when family and friends exchange gifts in the USA. That is why every year it becomes more and more popular among retailers to sell the leftover products.

Boxing Day History

During the reign of Queen Victoria, servants, tradesmen and the poor used to receive gifts. Servants worked on Christmas Day and had the next day off to visit their own families. Thus, the upper class collected leftover food, goods or money and placed them in boxes to give to the poor.

One of the earliest records of this tradition was found in an entry in the diary of English parliamentarian Samuel Pepys in 1663. Pepys mentioned that he had sent a messenger to deliver a box of gifts and money to his cobbler. While it is not certain how the name “Boxing Day” came about, it may have come from the practice of giving these boxes as gifts.

The evolution of Boxing Day

While the holiday had its roots in helping the poor, like many modern celebrations, Boxing Day has changed and become more associated with after-Christmas deals in the USA. If you missed the Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales, this date is an excellent opportunity to buy on the cheap.
