When was GIANT EAGLE created?
In 1918 three families - the Goldstein, Porter and Chait - opened the Eagle Grocery chain. By 1928 it had grown into 125 stores and it merged with Kroger. As part of the merger the family had to stay away from the grocery business for three years.
In 1931 the families that started the Eagle Grocery joined with the owners of a recently opened grocery chain called OK Grocery, and they decided to combine their respective chains to make Giant Eagle.
During the 1950s the company introduced their own trading stamp program, established a gourmet food section and expanded the average store size to 15,000 square feet. They were also pioneers in computerizing their buying system. In the 1990s they reached 137 stores and by the 2000s they had over 400 stores and 32,000 employees.
