When was KATE SPADE created?
The brand was founded in 1993 in New York City by Kate Brosnahan Spade and her husband and business partner, Andy Spade. Kate was an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine, and took the expertise she gained from this role to design six models of the Sam handbag. Her debut line combined classic shapes, colors, and fabrics and an innovative square bag with a black label sewn on the outside that read “Kate Spade New York.” Their main target at the time was the upper-middle class.
In 1996, the brand opened its first store in New York City. By 2004, it was operating 13 stores in the United States and did not ship out of the country.
In 2017, Tapestry, Inc. bought Kate Spade & Company. After Kate Spade's suicide in 2018, the company made a million dollar donation to mental health awareness as a way to honor its late founder.
