K.R. Perry opened a Ben Franklin variety store in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1953. It later became known as K&K 5&10. Later, in 1986, Doug Perry, Macon Brock, and Ray Compton started another chain store by the name of Only $1.00. It has five locations, one in Georgia, one in Tennessee, and three in Virginia.
The expansion of dollar stores went on alongside K&K toy stores. It went on mostly in enclosed malls. In 1993, the name Only $1.00 was changed to Dollar Tree to address possible multiple price-point strategies in the future. In 2001, Dollar Tree incorporated the Canadian discount chain store Dollar Giant. It has since rebranded all the Dollar Giant stores into Dollar Tree. It currently operates 227 stores across Canada, concentrated in Western Canada and Ontario.
