The story of Hannaford began when Arthur, Howard, and Edward, the Hannaford Brothers, started selling produce in Portland, Maine, in 1883.

The brothers looked at their customers and understood what they cared about most – family, community, quality, value – and built the business accordingly. By 1960, Hannaford Bros. had constructed a 200,000-square-foot distribution center in South Portland, Maine, to better service more retail stores.

With the purchase of 31 Sampson's grocery stores in 1966 as well as the 1967 purchase of Progressive Distributors, Hannaford expanded its retail presence. By 1971, the company's earnings topped $1 million.

Today, Hannaford operates more than 180 stores across Maine and has more than 26,000 associates. It is one of the state's largest employers, the purchaser of locally grown and produced food, and a contributor to charities that fight hunger, promote health and wellness, and support families and child development.
