When was METRO MARKET created?
Metro Market’s history began in 1883 when a 23-year-old entrepreneur named Bernard Kroger opened his first Kroger store in downtown Cincinnati. In 1884, Kroger opened its second store and by 1930, Kroger pioneered the four-side parking lot in its stores.
By 1990, the Kroger brand had become a supermarket and multi-department giant, acquiring other businesses to expand to more US regions and new markets. By that time, Kroger bought Pay Less Food Markets, JayC Food Stores, and Hilander Foods. In 1998, Kroger merged with Fred Meyer.
Metro Market was created as part of Krogers’ expansion, designed to supply customers with fresh produce and a wide variety of world-renowned brands in the East Coast region.
