When was SHAW’S created?
Shaw’s story started in 1860, when an entrepreneur by the name of George Clinton Shaw decided to open his first grocery store in Portland, Maine. In 1919, Mainer A. Davis bought the business from Shaw and started operating the store independently from his other businesses.
In 1941, Shaw’s became one of the first self-service supermarkets in the country, together with BPM stores, another one of Davis’s businesses. In 1965, Shaw’s expanded to Massachusetts and New Hampshire, acquiring old buildings and turning them into new venues.
By the 1980s, Shaw’s was already a power player in the supermarket arena, expanding and opening new locations each year, with bigger buildings, bigger listings, and more parking space for their customers. The expansion included the first Shaw’s SuperStore in the country.
