When was Stew Leonard's created?
In 1969 Stew Leonard, the son of the founder and owner of a dairy with a state of the art pasteurizing and bottling plant, opened his store named after himself in Norwalk, Connecticut.
The first Stew Leonard’s sold only eight items, and to this day they keep their catalog short, carrying 2,200 items unlike the average 30,000 usually found in grocery stores, in order to better guarantee freshness, quality and value.
The torch was passed to the next generation of the Leonard family as Stew Leonard Jr. took over as President and CEO in 1987 and Tom Leonard opened the second store in Danbury in 1991.
Growth continued with the opening of a store in Yonkers in 1999, another in Newington in 2007, one in Farmingdale in 2016 and the most recent one in 2019 in Paramus.
