When was STOP & SHOP created?
Stop & Shop started in 1936 when an entrepreneurial couple named Solomon and Jeanie Rabinowitz opened a grocery shop in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1914, the Rabinowitz family opened their first Stop & Shop grocery, positioning themselves as an affordable shop to acquire a respectable amount of quality goods.
Later on, Stop & Shop started using the self-service system that competitor Piggly Wiggly invented, allowing their customers to shop comfortably and without requiring constant help from their staffers.
By 1981, the company already had locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and southern New York state. They opened their first superstore in 1982, officially becoming one of the biggest supermarket businesses in the northeastern region.
