In 1948 Richard “Dick” Stack opened his fishing tackle store in Binghamton, New York. 4 years later the business expanded to offer work clothes, sportswear, camping gear and picnic supplies. In 1971 a second store was opened in Vestal.

Ed Stack and his siblings bought the company from their father in 1984, and in 1986 they started selling sports and outdoor equipment, athletic apparel and footwear.

The store’s headquarters were relocated to Pittsburgh in 1994 and continued to expand quickly, reaching 50 stores by 1996, 100 in the year 2000 and 141 in 2002.

In 2007 Dick’s Sporting Goods acquired Chick’s Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy, after which it became the largest specialty golf retailer in the country.

In 2011 the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation was started to help with youth sports participation.
