Scheels' history dates back to 1902 with its founding by German immigrant Friedrich A. Scheele, who moved to Sabin, Minnesota with his wife Augusta and their children, Margaret and Frederick. In the beginning, Scheele was involved in the growing of potatoes, and with the money earned from the first harvest he invested in a small hardware and general merchandise store.

The business grew and in 1930 Scheels opened more general merchandise stores in North Dakota and Minnesota. In 1946 Frederick B. Scheel, son of Frederick M. Schell, joined the company after serving in World War II. A year later, in 1947, his brother Charles Scheels joined the business. It wasn't until 1972, when Steve D. Scheel, son of Fred B. Scheel, convinced his father to stop selling hardware and focus on sporting goods.

Scheels currently has a total of 29 stores in 13 states: Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, among others.
