Gordon and Carole Segal opened the first Crate and Barrel in Chicago, Illinois in 1962 to fulfill their vision of providing tasteful but affordable household products to young couples. The store was located in an abandoned elevator factory and managed to offer reduced prices by buying directly from artisanal producers.

In 1968 they opened their second location in Wilmette, and three years later their third one in Oak Brook. In 1977 they opened their fourth store in Chestnut Hill, the first one outside of the Chicago area.

The chain continued its rapid growth, reaching 17 stores in 1985 and 59 by 1995. In 2008 Crate and Barrel became an international company when it opened its first location in Ontario, Canada. It expanded into Singapore in 2013, Peru in 2015, Colombia in 2016, and Costa Rica in 2017.

Since 2011 Crate and Barrel is owned entirely by the Otto Group.
